How does a story start?
I always like to say I write stories like I cook soup. Sometimes, I look at the contents of my fridge and just work with whatever’s in there—cube them, slice them, toss them into the broth and let them all simmer together in the pot:
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.”
–William Shakespeare, from “Macbeth”
Will have to admit that some kind of witchery is involved.
